The morning started with a rush of energy. I remember the sound of the vehicles pulling up—a sudden burst of laughter and loud, vibrant voices spilling out into the community hall.

As the volunteers from Home Foundation, Habitat for Humanity New Zealand, and Parry Field Lawyers gathered into a circle to introduce themselves, the atmosphere was electric. You could feel the eagerness to bridge the distance between their lives and ours.

By the third day, the scene had shifted into a focused, steady rhythm.

I caught up with one of the volunteers who had been moving across the site with surprising

ease—painting timber frames, installing partitions, and handling a hammer as if she’d been doing it for years.

When I asked her about her experience, she shared something that stopped me in my tracks: “This is actually the first time in my life I’ve ever picked up a hammer.”

To see that level of competence, born just forty-eight hours earlier, was a profound reminder of the work we do here at Habitat for Humanity Fiji.

In the rush of a retrofit, it’s easy to focus on the structure – the frames, the joints, the finished walls. But watching my team of three staff carpenters’ mentor these volunteers was a reminder that we aren’t just in the business of construction. We are in the business of possibility.

My “Why” has always been to help people. As I watched our carpenters guide these volunteers, I realized that true help isn’t about finishing the job for someone else. It’s about creating a space where someone discovers they are capable of things they had never even considered.

To the teams from Home Foundation, Habitat NZ, and Parry Field Lawyers: thank you for bringing your energy to our shores. And to my team: thank you for being the kind of leaders who don’t just build walls but build confidence. You’ve shown me that the most enduring structures aren’t made of wood and nails, but of the belief we instill in one another.
